The first woodturning lathe Dick met was much too high and the teacher expected him to do some spindle turning. He quickly, and painfully, learned about the invisible corners of the spinning blank and never touched that wood with a chisel. When the electricity reached his home he, jointly with his brother, purchased a Wolf Cub drill with lathe attachment. He still uses some of those small bowls for bits on his workbench. His woodturning, and the machinery he uses, has progressed since then. For many years past he has participated in the Franklin Arts Festival, as well as the Royal Easter Show, and The National Woodskills Festival. His winning items from these exhibitions can be seen in his WoW album and in the Gallery of the National Association of Woodworkers NZ website (www.naw.org.nz). He has demonstrated woodturning throughout New Zealand, is an accredited woodturning tutor, and is national manager of the National Certificate in Woodturning training programme. He has been President of South Auckland Woodturners Guild and is still on the committee there. He is also a member of Franklin Woodturners Club, the National Association of Woodworkers NZ, and the American Association of Woodturners.
